This place was not good. I had the parmesan and spinach oysters and the spinach gave the oysters a bitter taste so I ended up returning the dish. I got the calamari tacos instead and it was little bits of calamari put on top of a huge tortilla with lots of lettuce. I ended up returning that too because it was just a rip off for the price of the taco. The fish taco was edible. Lots of batter and not enough meat but it was the only decent food item that I had that night. The drinks were good though and they were fairly cheap.

The blackened fish tacos are a must. Right amount of spice...just right amount of heat. We also enjoyed the grilled fish platter. ..yum! Fish cooked perfectly. Enjoyable dinner. Loved the tater tots : ) Dislike the outdoor chairs. Will be back!

We loved it. Had the Mahi Mahi and the salmon, both we prepared excellently. Highly suggest this place. We will be sure to back for Lent. Staff was friendly and very attentive. I've never seen beer as an option for one of your sides. Brenda T

The shrimp tacos were good! Bigger than I expected! The salmon was also good. The Smuggler's Punch was a little too sweet for me, but still tasty. The decor inside is really fun!

Cannot find a better value. Tacos were superb. Calamari & fish tacos blackened. Terrific!

Surprisingly varied menu for such an 'inland' city. We had the fish tacos and they were delicious. We also had the smoked salmon dip, served with crackers. THAT was expertly prepared. The fish tacos came either battered, grilled or blackened. I had the grilled which were very good, although the grill seasoning was a little salty for my taste. I wouldn't take away points for that because I have s low threshold for 'salt'. Mr got the battered fish tacos, which were also very good. Highly recommended.

1 star only because I couldn't give it zero. Had to send my burger, ordered medium well, back twice. After the second time, I decided to change my order to something else. Have been here an hour now, and we need to get back to work. Probably not gonna make it back here anytime soon.

Incredible seafood for the middle of Iowa! I have been here several times and it's been great food, drinks, and service every time. The fish tacos are inexpensive yet full of flavor and fill you up. Fries are hand cut and homemade. The shrimp they use are premium and large. The same awesome shrimp are used for all you can eat specials. The salmon dip is smoked in house and is a perfect appetizer. Buffalo shrimp are unique and go great with a cold beverage. Best margarita in Cedar Rapids is the Texas heat. - house made infused tequila makes it unique. In fact all special drinks are great- the skinny grapefruit is fresh and flavorful. Perfect place to bike to when it's nice, but a great place to grub out on clam chowder and fried fish in the winter. Friendly staff even when it's packed. Highly recommended eatery!

My husband and I just left here after waiting for over an hour for our fried fish dinner on a Friday night. After a half hour wait, the bartender apologized for the wait a couple of times but after that, we didn't hear anything after we complained. Finally, at the one hour and five minute mark, we left and went to Texas Roadhouse. My husband and I are both culinary school graduates, and this is inexcusable on a Friday night during lent. When we left, the bartender shouted "we only have two fryers". Seriously? You are a fish restaurant on Friday night during Lent. Take the baskets out of the fryers and let the fish free float on those nights for more space in the fryer. We won't be back.

When we arrived, the upstairs area was about half full, so we walked around the dining area looking for a seat. We quickly found that all of the unoccupied tables needed bussed. A clearly overwhelmed waiter shouted to us from across the room that they weren't seating upstairs. "Go downstairs if you want to sit down!" So downstairs we went. The basement had no patrons in it, and a bartender behind the bar. Everything looked consistent with the decor, and it was clean and properly put together. The chairs were oversized, and it's a shame. Just weird how big they were. You could not sit in them without someone else moving or getting up. I'd swap them out, if given the opportunity. After a couple minutes, the waiter from upstairs came down to loudly complain about how he had to send us downstairs (I think it was a staffing issue that night). The bartender came over promptly and took our orders (they were out of the first 2 beers I asked for, as well as the beer my wife asked for). There was no atmosphere music, so we sat in the quiet, awkward basement for about 15 minutes. Eventually I asked the bartender to turn on some music, and he did. When the food arrived, it was really great. Definitely worth a repeat visit based on this alone. I had a shrimp po boy, and I loved it. The atmosphere, flabbergasted wait staff, and limited selection of drinks almost spoiled the experience, but we will be back, with hopes of a better experience.

Since the reviews were good, my son and I decided to try this place out for lunch. I was hungry for fish and the beer battered fresh cod sounded good to me. My son, being a typical picky nine year old, got the mozzarella sticks. While he liked his choice, I was very disappointed in mine. The fish pieces were greasy and the batter was heavy and soggy. I ordered my french fries extra crispy (I hate soggy fries) and they came out very brown and overcooked, yet still soggy. It's as if the frying oil wasn't hot enough and that's why both the fish and fries absorbed too much oil. I also got a side of coleslaw, which was heavy in vinegar, leaving almost an inch in the bottom of the cup. On the postitive side, our waitress Kate was very friendly.

Loved it. I showed up just before the lunch crowd really hit and had the smoked trout BLT. Amazing! Even the beans & rice were really good. The decor fits right in with the menu and the server was really nice and helpful. Would loved to try some of the margaritas, but I had to go back to work afterwards.

Loved everything about this place! The ambience was exactly what I was hoping for. We went on Friday night for the fish fry. It was lively inside but not crowded. We sat at a picnic table covered with butcher paper and you get crayons to draw or write on it - great for kids! I had the fried fish which was awesome along with cole slaw and red beans and rice. The red beans and rice was very good. The cole slaw was not made with mayonnaise, it was very light and fresh. My wife had blackened fish tacos on recommendation by Jessie our waitress. I tried these and they were incredible. A little spicy but highly recommended. Overall this is a fantastic place. Great food and great atmosphere. We will definitely be back many more times.

Never go on a Friday during lent. We were told it'd be a 20 minute wait at the door, and we were in the basement bar waiting for about an hour. It was cramped, sticky, and dirty. When we finally did get sat, all the waitresses were arguing about how bad their feet hurt, who got to go home first, and who was going to have to take our table. I was going to order the grilled chicken sandwich that had lettuce an tomato on it. It didn't say anything about what sauce was on it, and they said it had none. I then asked if they had mayo...they didn't. How do you have a grilled chicken sandwich and no mayo? As a restaurant that has coleslaw, that tells me that's not homemade. I settled on the brat burger which was bad, but I was starving so I didn't care. My boyfriend likes seafood which is what he ordered, and he was underwhelmed to say the least. By the time we finally got out of there, it was about 2 1/2 hours. The apparent owner or manager was apologetic about it being busy, but it still would not get me to go back. The way the staff interacted with each other and their behavior in the front of the house was appalling. I thought at one point one of the waitresses was going to throw a tantrum there in front of the customers. I hope it was just an off night, and not the norm.

Was pleasantly surprised at the quality of seafood here in this unassuming little restaurant so far from the ocean. It reminded me of one of our favorite fried seafood places back in California. The fried calamari on the appetizers was pretty tasty and I liked that it was thick pieces. The dipping sauce was super yummy. Also had to try the Homemade Clam Chowder since I am missing having it on a cold day. It had good flavor, big pieces of clam, and heavy on the potato. Hubby got the all-you-can eat fried shrimp and he was quite happy at the size of the shrimp and how well they were cooked. Batter was a little doughy, so he ended up peeling most of it off his shrimp. The shrimp was so big and he got so many right off, he only asked for a few more as follow up. I had the shrimp po' boy 'cause I have been craving one for months. Sooooo good - loved the remoulade sauce, shrimp cooked perfectly with just the right amount of breading, and tasty toasted roll. The choice of sides is awesome. We tried the coleslaw and garlic mashed potatoes, which were both winners in our book. Yummy iced tea and good service rounded out the evening. We were quite happy and can't wait to go again to try the fish tacos and several other dishes which caught our collective eye.

Went there for lunch with some business colleagues. We only visited the upstairs. The atmosphere is an attempt at a beach bar. The plastic lawn chairs and LOW picnic tables made it feel cheap and divey. The food was OK but not spectacular - but I don't think they're trying to be spectacular. The service was fair but our waitress seemed overwhelmed by too many tables during lunch. I'd say give it a try if you're looking for a simple lunch, enjoy a beach theme, don't mind eating on cheap furniture.

Chain restaurants are not my thing so I'm always on the look-out for something new and different. I found this place last night and in a word, interesting. I decided to sit at the downstairs bar rather than get a table. I passed through upstairs pretty quickly so can't say much about it other than I think the tables were outdoor-type tables and chairs and a fairly open room. The bar is set up with a bit too much bamboo, even though I realize the name of the bar is Big Bam-Boo Bar. It's actually pretty good sized and had a couple of really busy times. There's even a TouchTunes jukebox which is a personal favorite as I can order up songs from my phone. There wasn't much of a wine menu so I ordered a Dos Equis. It was actually pretty nasty, major skunk. The bartender was very nice and didn't charge me for it as it was undrinkable. I ordered a red wine instead, a Malbec, and it was a fair wine. Given the limited wine selection and the fact that it's billed as more of a tropical bar, I wasn't expecting much from it so wasn't disappointed. The menu has a decent selection of fish plates and I decided to try the fish tacos. Not quite what I expected but tasty! The tortillas were flour rather than corn, which is what I usually see for fish tacos. There was a lot of fish in the tacos and the cabbage/veggies were super-fresh and crunchy. There was a small amount of remoulade to just give a little taste of mayo, which was perfect. I don't like it when there is a ton of mayo on anything as it drowns out the flavor of the food and it's quite disgusting. The fish was cooked just right to keep it flaky and flavorful. All in all, good food and fun atmosphere. It has a very casual feel to it and the wait staff/bartenders seem like they have a good time at work, which makes it an enjoyable place to hang out. Right now I'm at 3-stars because I only had one menu item and I only spent time in the bar. I'll be back to check out the restaurant, see if I can update this rating (although 3 from me is saying something good!!).

I don't eat seafood, so this isn't really my kind of place, but I can't hold their focus against them just because it isn't my thing. The owners are present quite a bit, from what I've seen the two times I've been there. The main floor is the restaurant, while the basement is a typical bar, both with an island-type feel. The one time I went there for dinner, the waitress was really backed-up, which made the meal a lengthy affair, but one of the owners pitched in and made sure everyone was happy. You can't ask for much more than that!

Who in the world orders a hamburger at a seafood restaurant? This guy. The triple dunk burger was calling my name. I originally came in for some fish tacos but the man-beast inside couldn't refuse a half pound burger topped with a bratwurst patty, a pile of italian beef, and smothered in cheese. I gorged myself on this beefy cheesy masterpiece to the point of self loathing. I was defeated by this hefty sustenance but was able to relish in my loss. This burger is so manly it needs a beard.

Things are a changin' down in Bohemieville. If you haven't been here for a while, you'll notice some nice improvements! The Czech museum is on its new perch with a large addition going up. On the other end of the Ave a unique new eatery has opened in the former Bohemian Cafe. Smuggler's Wharf is themed like what I would call a Louisiana shrimp house with a seafood menu and linen covered old school picnic tables and smaller traditional dining tables. There's a number of outdoor picnic tables on the deck overlooking 16th Ave. It kind of reminds me of a Dick's Last Resort or Bubba Gump's but without the chain feel. We ate at the downstairs bar where we met Michael, who along with Al Zindrick, owns the business. He's managed a number of restaurants in the south. Of course everyone knows big Al, a longtime Village businessman. The lower level is decorated like a bamboo tiki hut. The menu is fairly diverse with a number of seafood choices including oysters (fried or on the half shell), crawfish, shrimp and scallops. There's Cajun items, burgers, steaks and chicken too. Prices are very reasonable, for example a 10oz. Ribeye is just $11.99 and comes with two sides. We ordered a few different items and shared. The Shrimp Po' Boy was a good choice. The fried clam strips were the typical frozen variety. The Pieces of Eight were 8 very big pieces of calamari. Overall we were weren't wowed by the food but appreciated the unique concept and plan to be back to try more of the menu. This place shows some promise and should play a key role in the renaissance of Czech Village. Come down and support them.

Most of the time this place is really good, but a few times I have found the food just fair. I ordered clam strips recently on a Monday evening, (which I had before and were excellent !) but was told they were out of them. I read a review about how good the shrimp Po'boy was, so I ordered that. Pretty disappointed. Way too much bread and 5 chewy breaded luke-warm shrimp hiding under a big bun. Others in my party were not impressed with their meals. Maybe Monday is not a good night for seafood in IA?

Really good food, good prices and great casual but classy atmosphere. Try the shrimp and sausage Po Boy sandwhich.

Wow, we had a group of 18 and not one person was disappointed. The Food was fresh and perfectly cooked. A fish house in Iowa with fresh fish. What a gem!

Just visited Smugglers Wharf with some friends. The place was busy, the service was good and the Friday night all you can eat fish fry was delicious. I enjoyed the Big Bloody drink, a bloody Mary with a meat stick, olives, pickle, pepper and lemon for the garnish...tasty! The fish was fresh and all in our party agreed it was very tasty. The atmosphere was casual and fun, felt like we were on vacation. In warmer weather it would be quite enjoyable to sit at a picnic table on the front porch to dine. The only thing I think could have been better was the coleslaw, I prefer a creamy dressing rather than the clear kind but if it is clear kind you love then I am sure you would like this.
